Regulation 14 of the Ionising Radiations Regulations 1999 requires that employers provide adequate information, instruction and training related to work with ionising radiation.

basic radiation awareness

A typical course in basic radiation awareness may take between half and one day and would cover the following modules:

• Nature of ionising radiation.
• Biological effects and dose quantities.
• Radiation in perspective.
• Restriction of exposure.
• Protection against external exposure.
• Protection against internal exposure.
• Measurement of ionising radiation and selection and use of monitoring instruments.
• Personal dosimetry.
• Introduction to radiation protection legislation.

training for radiation protection supervisors

A typical course for Radiation Protection Supervisors may take between one and two days and would cover the following modules:

• Nature of ionising radiation.
• Biological effects and dose quantities.
• Radiation in perspective.
• Restriction of exposure.
• Protection against external exposure.
• Protection against internal exposure.
• Measurement of ionising radiation and selection and use of monitors.
• Personal dosimetry.
• Health and safety management.
• The role of the RPS from a legal and practical perspective.
• The Ionising Radiations Regulations 1999.
• The Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2010.
• The Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations 2009.
• Other applicable legislation.
• Risk assessment and contingency plans.
