Experience
Jon joined Devonport Management Limited in 1993. He completed 2 year MoD training scheme with detachments at Her Majesties Naval Base (HMNB) Clyde and the Defence Radiological Protection Service (DRPS) in Alverstoke and was appointed as a health physicist producing risk assessments, safety cases and safety reports for new and existing nuclear facilities with a duty role in the response to Licensed Site accidents or reactor accidents. Major projects included risk assessments for refuelling operations, primary circuit decontamination facility modifications and safety justifications for radioactive effluent and resin tanks.
In 1997 he moved to HMNB Devonport where he became Health Physicist Ashore responsible for a team of 6 and managed all shore side health physics support to submarine repairs and was additionally a duty officer for out of hours support or emergency response. Major projects included improving waste assessment and accountancy techniques, installing a new electronic dosimetry system, purchase and testing of transport packages, design improvements to an active catch tank, preparing a decommissioning contract for an active support barge and support to metallurgical sampling of a submarine reactor pressure vessel.
In 2000 Jon moved to the Nuclear Department of HMS Sultan, as an Operational Health Physicist responsible for the safe use of radioactive materials and radiation generators for training and research. Major projects included the disposal of depleted uranium, commissioning a neutron generator and developing bespoke training courses in nuclear accident response, health physics and decommissioning.
