electromagnetic fields and waves

rf hazard warning

Electromagnetic and radiofrequency fields and waves cover a whole host of uses, which vary depending on the frequency of the fields and waves produced. Low frequency fields can be used for power generation, electronic surveillance, industrial heating process (i.e. RF induction heaters, welders and furnaces). Medium to high frequency fields and waves can be used to transmit signals for communications and commercial purposes, such as radio/TV, mobile phones, wireless networks, radars and satellites. Electromagnetic fields and waves can also be used for medical purposes such as diathermy amd MRI.

Assessing exposures to electromagnetic fields and waves is complex and requires specialist instrumentation, calibrated for the relevant frequencies or wavelengths for which measurements are being made. Exposures can also be estimated using theoretical modelling. Complexities in assessments arise as a result of how different frequency fields and waves interact with matter.

Aurora can provide the following for electromagnetic fields and waves (including static fields):

• Advice on the interaction, effects, measurement and assessment of electromagnetic fields and waves.
• Assessment of safety systems and control measures for systems producing electromagnetic fields and waves.
• Physical measurements of exposures at customer’s premises.
• Theoretical assessments of exposures from proposed or installed equipment.
• Production/review of safety documentation with regards to equipment producing fields and waves, i.e., risk assessments, safety cases.
• EMF safety training.
• Non-ionising radiation safety training.

Currently, there are no specific safety regulations for electromagnetic fields and waves in the UK. However, in 2004 and 2006 the European Union passed directives proposing new regulations regarding the exposure to electromagnetic fields and waves and artificial optical radiation for workers. These directives will lead to the production of specific regulations in the UK.
