Jill's interest in radiation protection resulted from her experience as a sponsored student within the research & development and safety sections at BNFL Sellafield.

After graduating from Imperial College, London, with a BSc(Hons) in Physics, she joined Devonport Management Limited as a Graduate Trainee Health Physicist in 1992. On successful completion of the training scheme, which included placements at AWE and DRPS and the gaining of a Post Graduate Diploma in Radiological Protection from the RNC Greenwich and University of Surrey, Jill took up a health physicist position within the Dosimetry Office at Devonport. Over the next four years, Jill gained experience in all areas of health physics, including site licence documentation, ALARP assessments, RPS training, setting up a reassurance whole body monitoring service and general management of the dosimetry office and its staff.

In 1998, Jill changed her career direction and accepted a position as a Medical Physicist with the Regional Medical Physics Department, based at Newcastle General Hospital. During her time with RMPD, Jill developed and wrote an on-line computer application to support their Approved Dosimetry Service, peformed acceptance and quality assurance testing on all types of diagnostic radiology equipment, gained State Registration as a Clinical Scientist and became Radiation Protection Adviser (certified by RPA2000) for several diagnostic radiology departments and community dental services.
