Experience

After graduating from Aberdeen University with a MSc in Medical Physics, Allan has been working in the radiation safety field since joining UKAEA in 1987 as a Health Physicist. Over the last 16 years he has worked for UKAEA on the Windscale and Harwell sites, AEA Technology and most recently he held the post of Head of the Health Physics Division of RWE NUKEM Ltd. He has extensive experience of radiation safety issues both from a technical and a commercial standpoint and from giving advice to managing large teams of radiation safety professionals. He was also a key member of the team that invented the design council award winning technology Groundhog (copyrighted), an innovative method for surveying large areas of land for radioactive material using Global Positioning Technology, highly sensitive detection equipment and Geographical Interface Systems.
Key Skills

- Proven management ability having held posts as Sales Manager, Product Manager, Department Manager and Operations Director. During this time I have managed professional staff, salespersons, department managers, administrative staff and a large industrial workforce up to a total of 300.
- Human Resource Management skills through all levels and processes including disciplinary and poor performance.
- Extensive experience of recruitment (both graduate and experienced).
- Excellent people skills including training and development, team building, mentoring and staff relations.
- Proven innovative and creative thinking allied with strong understanding of markets and market needs as demonstrated by developing a new product named Groundhog. Groundhog received a patent and the award of 'Millennium Product' from the Design Council in 1999. Since then, Groundhog has turned over in excess of £5 million sales.
- Excellent record of achieving financial targets. Never failed to meet budget, both sales and operations, since taking P&L responsibilities for the last 6 years.
- Growth of consultancy business from very low ebb to doubling of turnover within 3 years through aggressive recruitment and motivation of staff.
